Retail & FashionSpecsavers × Kieran Donaghy — Local Legends Campaign
Specsavers activated its GAA Hawk-Eye sponsorship by celebrating Kerry legend Kieran Donaghy, creating authentic local content.

Overview
The campaign
Specsavers partnered with Sport Endorse to activate its GAA Hawkeye sponsorship
The challenge
As the official sponsor of GAA Hawk-Eye, Specsavers had already secured strong visibility during Ireland's biggest Gaelic Games fixtures. The challenge was moving beyond logo placement and sponsorship recognition to create meaningful engagement with supporters.
Rather than focusing solely on the technology behind Hawk-Eye or traditional advertising, Specsavers wanted to develop a campaign that reflected the values of Gaelic Games-community, heritage and local pride. The objective was to create content that supporters would actively choose to watch and share, strengthening emotional affinity with the brand while complementing its broader "Should've Gone to Specsavers" positioning.
The campaign also required a personality whose reputation transcended sporting success and resonated authentically with GAA audiences nationwide.
The Sport Endorse solution
Working with its appointed communications agency, Tangerine Communications, Specsavers developed the Local Legends campaign as a content-led extension of its Hawk-Eye sponsorship.
Following careful consideration of several potential ambassadors, Kerry icon Kieran Donaghy was selected as the campaign's central figure.
Production took place in Tralee, allowing Donaghy to tell his own story within the community that shaped his career. Rather than creating a conventional commercial, the team produced a four-minute documentary-style feature exploring his relationship with Kerry football, local identity and the enduring importance of the GAA.
The campaign was distributed primarily through Facebook, where long-form social video was rapidly becoming a powerful channel for sports storytelling and community engagement.
Athlete fit
Kieran Donaghy was an ideal ambassador for the campaign because he embodied both elite sporting achievement and authentic community identity.
As an All-Ireland winner, All Star and one of Gaelic football's most recognisable personalities, Donaghy carried credibility with supporters across Ireland. Equally important, his strong roots in Tralee and Kerry reinforced the campaign's "Local Legends" concept, ensuring the content felt genuine rather than promotional.
His natural storytelling ability, humour and approachable personality translated particularly well to long-form digital content.
